Why do YOU #LoveWhereYouLive – CONTEST!

Why do YOU #LoveWhereYouLive

Basically…. what makes YOUR community, city, village, THE place to live in!
Why do YOU #LoveWhereYouLive?!
RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc  is running a cool contest right now called #LoveWhereYouLive with some great prizes to be won. So it got me thinking, what makes Kitchener Waterloo special to me?

GRAND PRIZE: The Oban Inn, Spa & Restaurant Package!
Second Prize: The Olde Bridge Place
Third Prize: Sanctuary Day Spa

Although I didn’t grow up in Kitchener-Waterloo I’ve been here ever since the University of Waterloo drew me out of high school, and I loved it so much, I just never left.  Centrally located in the middle of the province, it’s an ideal location that is only a short drive to most anywhere but offers everything I need in a smaller sized city.  After marrying a Kitchener boy nearly twenty years ago, I now call this home and I’d love to share just a few of the fantastic places I’ve discovered.

Best Saturday Outing – We are blessed to have not one, but two wonderful farmer’s markets in Kitchener Waterloo. Depending on your mood, you can try more quaint Kitchener  Market or if you up for some serious shopping and crowds, venture out to the much larger St Jacobs one and a full-fledged Mennonite , flea market, artisians and outlet mall shopping experience. Both offer fabulous fresh produce, meat breads and cheese and tasty treats to satisfy every taste. Fresh apple fritters – yum!

Favorite Family Restaurant – The entire family agrees that a trip to Moose Winooskis is a good time for all. Great atmosphere and yummy food, including some of the best wings in town make for a nice night out.  The family birthday tradition is to wear the Moose Antlers and spin the wheel and pray you don’t land on ‘Pie in the face!’

Best Family Thing to do on a Sunday – Our busy family enjoys unplugging and taking a hike along the peaceful and scenic Grand River on any one of the many hiking trails in the Walter Bean Trail System. We especially like the one down by the bridge close to Breslau off Victoria Street.  Watch canoes and kayaks going by, see what the fishermen are catching that day and if you are lucky, spot hawks and maybe even an owl one one of our trips.

Rangers Logo

Favourite Friday Night Event – From September to March, Friday night is game night for the Kitchener Rangers at The Auditorium. Hockey fans from Rangers Nation converge upon the building to take part in what has become a rousing Friday night tradition.  The arena is sold out almost every game as dedicated fans create a virtual sea of red white and blue with jerseys and apparel, showing their undying adoration to their home team. Win or lose, KW loves their hockey and loves their Rangers and fans enjoy showing their support in this Friday night tradition where fans of all ages socialize and enjoy a good night out.

Favorite Local Event – The Kitchener Blues Festival is a must attend festival for my husband every August. Every year we discover more great musical acts and get to hear some of the best Blues musicians around. Nothing like soaking up some hot summer rays, listening to some blues and sipping a nice cold one on the outdoor patio at City Hall. Oh and did I mention is FREE. Wow..

Favourite FREE Fun for Kids – The Kitchener Public Library offers incredible free fun for kids of all ages and we are regulars at many of their programs year round. Programs are creative and current and keep kids interested and busy, while teaching them good life skills along the way. Whether is a summer, PA Day diversion or special event like Mine Craft Mania, the staff are friendly and energetic and always make the kids glad they came.

Getting Paid to Buy $tuff – Join the Checkout 51 Revolution!

Have you heard the buzz surrounding Checkout 51 – the hottest new app to hit Canadian grocery shoppers?  The concept is this simple – get paid to buy stuff. Launched in December 2012  by developers from Vaughn, Ontario, Checkout 51 has exploded  on to the grocery shopping scene and had 100,000 members its first two months. This intriguing new app has set the couponing world upside down by paying shoppers to purchase items from predetermined list of grocery products. Best of all it is a FREE app which is incredibly easy to use and after reading this post, you will know everything you need to know to get started.

The first time I heard about it, I was skeptical. “They are going to pay me to buy stuff? Come on!” I thought.   Well folks, I am here to tell you that Checkout 51 is not a scam, it is real and it is awesome. I know many friends who jumped on board as soon as it launched and have already enjoyed cashing their reward cheques of $30, $40 and $50!

The rewards add up quickly.  I consider Checkout 51 a kind of ‘reverse couponing’ because you are rewarded after you buy by proving it via your receipt. I have only done it for about 5 weeks and my account is already sitting at $36. Last week alone my account increased by $8.50 for buying 6 products.I have claimed milk, bread, crackers, frozen pizzas, pasta,  dairy products including cheeses and butters so nothing crazy. For the most part, it is stuff I would have bought anyways.  I don’t buy everything on the list, only the things I need or will use but the items are pretty normal.

Checkout 51 feels like a game to me as I search out the products on the list and is a  fun new way to save. Best of all, this is a game that you win every single time.  Here is a guide to making Checkout 51 work for you:

How Checkout 51 works:

* Download this FREE app  any Apple product – iPhone, iTouch, iPad – as long as it has a camera.  If you don’t have any of these products, I bet one of your kids does so get them to download it for you and you can teach them valuable lessons on couponing & the value of a buck. My daughter loves helping me.  (NOTE: They are working hard on an Android & Blackberry version coming soon)

* Once you open an account, Checkout 51 reveals a list of products each week (Wed to Wed) for shoppers to choose from each with a corresponding dollar amount. If you purchase that item, your account will be credited that dollar amount. You are basically being rewarded for buying that item (in the form of cold hard cash $)

Sample of the weekly product list.

Sample of the weekly product list.

* You earn these credits by taking a photo of your grocery receipt and uploading it to their site. It’s really that easy

.* You may claim 1 item per account only. So even if you buy 5 packs of wieners for a $2 reward, you only get to claim it once. Unless you have multiple accounts which is allowed if you have more than 1 Apple device and different accounts.

* Once your account reaches a balance of $20, you may ask them to send your cheque which will arrive by mail. There is no catch — this is a regular cheque = cold hard cash.

Some Tips To Share

* Take Good Photos – Once you get the hang of taking pictures of your receipt, it’s easy as pie. I am not that techy and I can do it. Make sure you photos have good lighting, no shadows and are not blurry. If you send a bad photo, you will get a message from their office and be asked to resubmit it. They are helpful and forgiving.

* Buy & Claim Early  – There is a limited quantity offers on each product and when there is a HOT offer (like these FREE wieners for example) you should purchase and claim your offer early. If you wait too long, they will run out. This has happened to me twice already but I am learning .. don’t wait until the last day or two to claim (Tues or Wed).

* Super Save by Combining Flyer Deals & Coupons – Checkout 51 doesn’t matter how much you actually paid for the item you claim, just that you bought it and have your receipt.  So if you can double up your savings by using a coupon, getting a clearance item or taking advantage of a special sale price, good on ya! You just Super Saved!

* One Week to Claim  The list of products changes each Wednesday night at midnight and consumers have one week to take advantage of these offers. I bought everything one Wed and forgot to upload my receipt before I went to bed and missed out totally.

So back to this week’s two HOTTEST deals on free wieners & cheap Shreddies. ( Yes folks I said FREE!!)

FreshCo & Giant Tiger both have Schnieders Red Hots on sale this week for $1.88 a pack. Checkout 51 is offering a $2 credit for purchasing them. So when you do the math, you will actually earn .22 cents for buying these wieners. Seriously, it doesn’t get ANY better than that my friends!   Sales run April 10-17 and you have up until midnight April 17th to claim you Checkout 51 offer.

FreshCo has Post Shreddies on sale this week for $2.88 (family size box 710-25g)  Checkout 51 is offering a $2 credit for purchasing them. Your final cost will be .88 cents. Amazing!  Click here to see the FresCo flyer… http://www.freshco.com/Home.aspx
