Recycled Orchestra Visits Waterloo Friday April 25th – From the Rubble There is Hope & Music

Standard

Image

This sounds like a really great event to support and remind ourselves how little people have in the world and be inspired to see that even in a giant pile of garbage, these people have created joy & music! Free admisson to the event with a goodwill donation is being accepted towards supporting the orchestra.

====================================================

From the slums of Paraguay comes an unlikely orchestra, playing instruments
made from trash found on the landfill.

The orchestra comes from a slum in Paraguay called Cateura where families live and work on a giant landfill site. They are doing a cross-Canada fundraising tour to help raise money to build a Community Centre and start a scholarship fund so youth in the area have a chance to get a post-secondary education. The Community Centre will act as a social hub in the neighbourhood, offering workshops and courses to the families and will also provide space for The Recycled Orchestra to practice, and offer music classes for children interested in learning an instrument.

There is a dire need for schools in the area, as most teachers and organizations aren’t willing to enter the slum. Their hope is to one day build a school in Cateura so children growing up on the landfill can break the cycle of poverty and get a quality, Christ-centered education.

Let’s not let the weather ruin the night for the kiddies so it is good to be prepared.  I am sharing some trick or treating alternatives. Two are indoor and one is outside but would not require as much walking around.

Pre Natal / New Mom Program

Do you know someone who is expecting or has a newborn baby?

Please tell them about the Prenatal / New Moms & Dads Program happening at The Parent Child Resource Centre. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Parent Child Resource (PCRC) offering programs and support to parents and families in our community. I can attest to the high quality and caring staff at the PCRC  having personally been a participant  in many of their programs for the past 12 years with my own three children. The staff are professional, caring and friendly and they offer a safe and welcoming place for parents to connect.

What to Expect:

This is a wonderful opportunity for first-time moms and dads and pregnant women to connect with others in a friendly and welcoming environment. This is a non-denominational program open to everyone.

Things that will be discussed include:

*What to expect the first year

*How do you fit a new baby in your life

*Connecting you with other community resources

FREE “Naturescaping” Gardening Seminar Series in Waterloo Region

Standard

I continue to be amazed and inspired by the variety and quality of free events offered in our community.  When I spotted this ad in the local paper, I just knew I had to share it with my readers. With Spring just around the corner, this one is just in the nick of time for those of us who love to get our hands dirty in the garden!

The Region of Waterloo’s  ‘Naturescaping Seminar Series’ offers everything from creating flair in your landscaping, happy, healthy grass and the good the bad and ugly of gardening.  You must preregister but they are free so take a little ‘me time’ and expand your mind.

Special Hockey Interntational Tournament
Amazing hockey tournament coming to Kitchener and games are free so come by and support this cool event!  March 14-16, 2013, Kitchener will be hosting the 19th Annual Special Hockey International tournament. The annual SHI tournament brings together teams from across North America and England once a year for a major gathering. There are no elimination rounds, no one team is crowned champion. In our eyes they are all champions. Every team plays up to 4 games and every player on every team plays equally.Special Hockey allows the developmentally challenged to achieve their own goals on their own schedule.
“To provide an opportunity for hockey players of any ability to play in a tournament which emphasizes fun, friendship and respect.”
